This paper starts with a review of the history of the idea of Daotong(orthodox transmission), and suggests that neither Han Yu's "understanding history in terms of the Dao" nor Yang Liang and his followers' "understanding the Dao in terms of history" is an adequate analysis since, in particular, they fail to consider the roles of Mencius and Xunzi in the transmission of Confucian orthodoxy. Examining the recent excavated bamboo manuscripts from Guodian and bought from abroad by Shanghai Museum, one learns that both Mencius and Xunzi were connected with and influenced by Confucius and Zisi. If the Daotong is viewed as the origin of Chinese cultural life, a ceaseless spiritual history, neither Mencius nor Xunzi alone could be the origin of Confucian Daotong. Both of them can be identified with advantages and disadvantages. In reconstructing the tradition and renewing the spiritual life of Confucianism, we need to unify the two and selectively absorb ideas from both. Therefore, the author proposes ideas such as "New Four Classics" and "New Daotong", and proposes some concrete suggestions for unifying the two traditions and reconstructing the Daotong.
